I try my darnest to keep track and paste entries as I get them, but sometimes get side-tracked and data is missed. I have a bad habit of shoving sheets of notes into a pile on my desk, while I promise myself that I'll tend to entering the data into the DOOL. Later, but real soon, the pile gets too big and it is obscurred by all the other paper items that seem to be magnetically drawn to my desk. Then to make matters worse, I get busy or get visitors. My desk is a disaster. I grab the paper pile and shove it out of sight and tell myself that I'll remember them and that I'll sort them out 'real soon' once the visitors are gone. The headache begins when I look for the piles. They are AWOL because either I or Patty mistakeningly moved the piles..... I should know better, but in my old age I find that putting things off just causes complications. Better to put everything in its place and transfer right away and not have to go looking for the AWOL's! Now you know some of my problems.

THE 2005 ASA TURKEY REUNION IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

                                   29 September - 2 October 2005

The 2005 ASA Turkey reunion will be held in THE MENGER HOTEL in San Antonio, TX. It is located at 204 Alamo Plaza which is immediately adjacent to both the world famous Alamo, the Rivercenter Mall and the enchanting River Walk which runs through the heart of the city which is the 9th largest city in the United States.. The Menger Hotel is one of San Antonio's most desirable locations for reunions and this fact alone justifies the room rates negotiated by Jon Kjoller. We could have negotiated with a hotel near the San Antonio airport for the reunion at a price similar to that charged at Huntsville, but decided that the fantastic downtown location and amenities far out-weighed other considerations. To discover more about the Menger Hotel go to: www.historicmenger.com
TO MAKE RESERVATIONS: Call 1-800-345-9285 or 1-210-223-4361. When making the reservations state that you will be attending the ASA Turkey reunion and request a modern or
antique style room with a balcony. Also request either a King or two Queen size beds. Otherwise they might assign you to a smaller room. The daily rate will be $99 + tax per room and is good for the day before and after the scheduled dates. Check in: 3 pm - Check out: Noon. Have your
credit card nearby when making your reservation. The menger does not permit pets. THE MENGER CANCELLATION POLICY: The Cancellation Policy will be 72 hours before 29 September 2005 for the Menger Hotel Reservations. BANQUET AND AMENITIES PRICE: The cost for the Saturday banquet and hospitality amenities are being worked out by Jon Kjoller, John Hagamon and Don Fulton and the fees needed will be forthcoming.

IN SICK BAY - PRAYERS NEEDED

Regret to inform everyone that served with Stuart (Stu) Hammett, at Sinop, Turkey in 1958-1959 that he has taken a turn for the worst. Talked to Jim Forbus informs that Stu was diagnosed with an additional tumor on his spine and that he was sent to another hospital for evaluation. The evaluation was indicated that the tumor was inoperable and he was transported back to De Kalb Nursing Home. I talked to Rita last week and she said that the doctor had suspended radiation treatment because of low blood count. She was hopeful that Stu would recover so that they could restart the radiation treatment. It did not happen. Rita said that HOSPICE had been called. We all are very sadden to hear this bad news. Please keep Stu and his family in all of our prayers. Stu and Rita Hammet attended the 2004 ASA Turkey reunion at Huntsville, AL and Stu was looking forward to the 2005 San Antonio reunion.

                                 Is It a Stroke?

                                  Three Simple Questions
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
(1). Ask the individual to smile.
(2). Ask him or her to raise both arms.
(3). Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Am able to report that I received your messages. Shades of progress. Thanks so very much for the messages. I am sure you and your better half are very proud of both your sons. I have been to both the Air Force Academy (Volleyball tournament in 1963) and West Point way back in 1947 when I was a First Sergeant and my neighbor gave me a couple tickets to a Black Knights football game at WP. Have been there a few times since as a tourist. Agree that WP is nicer area. The location on the Hudson and the old buildings. But both are great for young people and for our Nation. Must of course add the pictures are great. Will no doubt figure a way to eliminate you and only keep Patty. Not really! Also, received the "Days of Our Lives" and ASA Memory Book today. Since I fall into the category of "Dumb and Dumber" when it comes to these machines, I will wait until my expert on computers comes up from VA and lets me have some additional education. Will close for now and look into DOOL #144, I hope. Thanks again. Will be in touch.

Enlisted for 4 years in the ASA at Louisville, KY. Took basic at Fort Jackson, then on to Fort Devens for ditty-bop training. Successfully completed 058 and was sent to Det 4 via a 707 PA AM Clipper to Ankara. Like others his first impression of Turkey was the stinch of those horrible Turkish cigarettes. Along with 4 others, flew to Sinop in a twin engine Beechcraft piloted by two Warrant Officers. All of a sudden the plane took a nosedive and the pilots said that they were going down to find some camels. It wasn't long until they observed the camels and then proceeded onward to the Sinop airport. Enjoyed his year on the HILL. Remembers Edgar Fulbright from Florida. After Det 4 was assigned to Vint Hill Farms where he spent the last 27 months of his enlistment.

BELL, Preston L. (Preston of the Mojave) E2-E5 982 Det 27, MY65-DE66, 25445 Jasper Rd., Barstow, CA 92311, bolo1942@hotmail.com - gH - I canvassed my relay list and to date have received no comments. Per my message to them, no comments meant they had no preference. I was leaning towards WORD, but either one will do for me. Adobe Reader is a free download for those without it. A nice thing about the PDF format is you can use the read out loud feature. If you are not familiar with it check out the below. Now if I could just get that voice to change to a young sexy one things would be good. hehehe This is for clarity now you understand. It is a commonly known fact that the male can hear a female voice and thus get more of the facts, just the facts 'mam. :-) later amigo Preston of the Mojave

Using the Read-Out-Loud feature in an Adobe PDF document.

You can use the Read-Out-Loud feature to read aloud as much of an Adobe PDF document as you need: a page, a section, or the entire document.

Note: The Read-Out-Loud feature can read the text of a PDF file out loud, but is not a screen reader. Some systems may not support this feature.

To read a document out loud:

1. Open the Adobe PDF document you want to read, and then navigate to the page on which you want to start reading.

2. Choose View > Read Out Loud > Read This Page Only or Read To End Of Document.

To interrupt the read-out-loud feature:

Choose View > Read Out Loud > Pause or Stop.

Preston wants to know if anyone in the San Jose, CA area wants a professional DVD made of their special events, etc., have them get in contact with his son, Kenneth Bell, at bellsvideo@yahoo.com and he will send them a quick show of what he can do. Maybe he will come to the San Antonio ASA TURKEY reunion and capture us Vet's enjoying ourselves there. Whaadda ya thinK.

Hi Elder - This is a suggestion that might help those who want to get the Days of our Lives. When they want to be on the list make sure that they set there system up to receive E-Mail from Cbergmann@insp-eng.com. When you get 20 to 30 of those who want you to link into there web and put your name on their list it begins to be some time consuming. Be sides that we are very hesitant about logging into web sites that we do not know anything about. Make sure that they know I'm going to be sending them the days of our lives. Thanks for the thoughts of the day. These are great and so true for many of us. Just wanted to let you know we are well, not frozen as of yet, and looking forward to booking our reunion plans. I am glad we waited to make our air plans as Alaska will be starting a new flight to Dallas/Ft Worth in July and will fly direct (through Seattle) to Dallas from Anchorage. We were going to fly into Houston as San Antonio is cost prohibitive for some reason. Now we are considering into Dallas and rent a car. We plan on doing some traveling across the south to Baton Rouge and into Gulfport after the reunion and before we return home. Then we will be coming home again for hunting Season in December. We also have our usual May trip planned for my Mom’s 95th birthday. We should plan on having lunch somewhere. Maybe Jim and Sally could join us. Anyway, just wanted to say hello again. Summer is almost here and fishing will be upon us before we know it. Of course, we can hardly wait. We just returned from Vegas for a week, had fun but didn’t return rich. Keep in touch and see you in the summer. Thank you for the info. It always takes me back to the good ole days when I read this. I did want to tell you that we have made our reservations for the reunion several weeks ago and hope you received the info. Ernie is getting his BIO ready to submit to you. He also had a picture taken with Jim Houghton and was wondering why he wasn't included in this version. Anyway, we will see you at the reunion. I am Fran, Ernie's wife and act as his secretary so I am replying to your email. Thanks again.

BRYAN, Clark L. (Mixie) YOB 1943 RA17720300 E4-E5 988.1662 (Bulgarian) Det 27, OC66-NO67, & 4-4, NO67-15JN69, (Althea-Ret CDR, USN Nurse Corps), 918 Dibbles Trail, Webster, NY 14580, 585-671-8906, mix1bryan3@juno.com - Ret CDR(05) US Navy - Al, - You should have been a Mormon - a first moniker of Elder would have been perfect. You could have been called Elder Elder from the get go and probably by now, you could be relaxing in Salt Lake City as Prophet! Oh well, you'd have had to do something about your affinity to beer, booze, and wild women! HA! I tried being a Mormon for about 15 years when I was in the Navy and made it up to Elder, but then I had a "beer" attack (born Protestant), started chewing tobacco, and Althea had a caffeine attack (born RC), and we got tired of all the involvement it takes to be LDS, so we went back to my DRUID heritage and we're enjoying life again! :-) NOW, everybody is going to think your first name is ALVIN. Maybe you ought to go by RC or better yet, MSGT. I thought Green Hornet was pretty good. Isn't it amazing how our parents screw everything up? Althea has been haunted with her first name - everyone thinks the obvious and when renting apartments while she was single and in the Navy, she even had a difficult time arranging rentals over the telephone! She'd have to go in person and even then, nobody would believe it! HA! Oh well, everybody gives me a hassle with my own name - one teacher bawled me out in school for NOT putting my last name first. I waited until she finished her temper tantrum and then screamed - "LISTEN YOU TWIT, BRYAN IS MY LAST NAME!" Can I help it that my mother was in love with Clark Gable?? Thank goodness she didn't use KENT as my middle name or I'd never had heard the last of it. I can't even get my pharmacy items - everything is ALWAYS filed under Clark instead of Bryan. I'm surprised the Army and the Navy got it right.......most of he time.......hee, hee. What IS it about women and anniversaries?? I'd just as soon forget BUT every year, the flowers and cards inundate the household. Birthdays are getting to be a bore too - I rather start counting backwards!:-) YOB - 1943. RA17720300 (amazing that I still remember, but with all those MSGT's yelling at me for 4 years, how could I forget it??:-) My older daughter is graduating from HS this June; in fall, she's attending U of Buffalo (YEAH - ONE DOWN, ONE TO GO!). Younger daughter will be entering 9th grade. You have my address; phone number is (585) 671-8906. When you get up around Rochester, give us a holler. Webster is E of Irondequoit Bay.

Green Hornet, I think my biggest disappointment with the ASA reunion caper is that all those men I really liked and couldn't find, don't want anything to do with re-establishing contact! I enjoyed most of the men I met at DLIWC - Canby, Fransted, Bivens, Baker, Leedy, Lane, and so on - and looked forward to seeing them again some day, or at least carrying on a correspondence with them across the miles and years. I've always tried to maintain contact with those great folks I've met over the years in the military; my Email addressee list covers the Globe and most write back, or send the occasional joke, life updates, Xmas letter, etc. One friend I met in Guam (lives in Montana) said that he wished all commands were required to maintain Alumni rosters and on-line photos of people stationed at those military assignments. It's true that our lives take different paths and we might not have much in common on a daily basis, but we WERE together for a few short years and have much in common during that select period. I can't think of one assignment in 22 years military, that I didn't have a BALL - mostly because of the truly fine people I had the good fortune to meet. It's disheartening to find men so disenchanted with life that they cut off old friends and memories - good and bad memories. In fact, I'd think that contact with people who you enjoyed in the past would do a body a world of good. An escape from the present "troubles" and enjoy corresponding with someone you used to enjoy at work, the off duty hours, the excitement living in some far away country. Fransted is probably the biggest disappointment of all. Sure, his life took a turn for the worse in Wyoming - maybe marriage - maybe his life pursuit; why turn away from old friends? We all have disappointments in life, but I've always found that -damn good advice- from shared experiences -lies in waiting -from old friends. I've yet to ask for help from someone I haven't seen in years and years - refuse to offer advice or share an similar experience with marriage, raising children, and so forth. It's downright Exhilarating to know that "MY Problem" isn't unique! I don't write a lot to the DOOL because.....hee, hee........everything I write seems to get printed. Most of what I write to you is personal - not for publication. Take care. Mixie

Several people mentioned a CD early on, and I think there was a CD made of the 2002 era, but I am not sure. Have there been others, other than the 2002 edition which I received? If there are any copies lying around, I would be happy to pay for copying, mailing, etc. to get them. Also re-read DOOL #146, the last one posted and am looking forward to the next one. Hope you folks are all doing OK. Saw the ground hog ceremony on Fox News, so know the winter is still around in your part of the country. Keep warm, and keep the faith. best wishes to you and your Chief of Section.

Phyllis recently vacationed in Italy for 16 days with her brother and sister-in-law and reports that she had a great time in Rome, but that it was cold, 35 to 42 degrees during the day, and one day they even had snow. It melted as soon as it hit, but it was snow. She had packed warm clothes, but didn't expect it to be quite that cold. In the past they had asked Gene and Phyllis to go with them a few times, but Gene couldn't handle long plane rides, and they had the RV, and enjoyed traveling in the US. They used to go with us in the RV some, and we always had a good time. It took nine hours over and eleven back, but food and movies helped pass the time. We walked the streets of Rome each day, with the exception of a day trip to Pompeii. Gene Douglass and I walk two and a half miles each day, weather permitting, and that paid off. Phyllis repoirts that they are trying to get her to go to Greece with them next spring. Gene and Phyllis had been to Rome when they were stationed in Germany, but it was only for one or two days, and we didn't get as far south as Pompeii.

topwop@olypen.com - I knew Frank Ingrassia while serving at Chitose, 1955-58 and called him on 9 February 2005. After exchanging Chitose memories I ask if he had served in Turkey. His reply, "Hell yes, I was on the HILL for a year and had FUN there even though he partook of too much booze. Was initially assigned as the NCOIC of the 058's and later replaced MSG E-7 Harry Wesfall (sp?) as the Ops Sgt and later was placed in charge of the 6-7 iki pachuk convoys to/from Ankara (470 km) on a regular basis. On most trips 2-3 cases of beer were consumed. Once was buzzed by the Det 4 courier plane and remembers the non-fatal crash of that plane in a nearby mountain. Remembers the senior NCO named Crawford Boyd who nobody liked. Frank now admits to being part of the drunks who "stoned" Boyd's hootch most every nite when returning from the NCO Club. Said that Boyd who was an E8 had unit orders cut making him a Sergeant Major.
Received your email and gathered my reflections of the above period. 33 years latter. i will give it my best shot. I will write up info in a block form in a time order. Do you have a time sked? Bear with me as i have a lot of personal things going at this time. The weather here was summer time the last few days, but winter has come back. its cold outside.enjoy. END Frank

“Hey Burt…. Although I was at BH [Baumholder] just a short time, the Lebanon situation in ’58 caused me to be sent to Sinop, Turkey. I have always had a fond spot in my heart for BH and wish I could have spent my full two years there. I was just getting into the routine, had gone to Paris on a pass and then, bang, 10 or 15 of us were on our way to Ankara. We are having a ASA reunion in San Antonio, Sept 29 to Oct 2, 2005. It is Turkey vets but since I'm organizing it I thought it would be great to have, especially the 50's and early 60's vets, people from other stations. Personally I would love to talk to 058's from Korea, Japan, etc. to see what their experiences were. What do you think?” (Well, I think two things: I think some of this will be repeated in the Reunions Section; and I think, if you really want to “rub shoulders” with 058's from Korea, Japan, etc., you ought to attend a FASAF function. Oh, I was an 058 [717 then] in Japan.)

Was sent to Karamusel via Ankara, believing that we were really assigned to Sinop. Det 4-4 was quite exciting for an Okie that had not been outside of state let alone 5,000 miles from the U.S. Rotated in July 71 with a 12 hour layover in the Istanbul Airport because the plane that was to come from Ankara had engine trouble just before take off at Ankara. Was stationed at Fort Bragg NC as a leggg, with the 317th grp. Maj Frickie was the CO in Turkey but i was discharged before he got to North Carolina. I am planning to attend San Antonio, seeing as how I live in Houston, maybe they won't destroy I-10 like they did 9-11.

Good to hear from all. I remember Craig Dumas, but I don't recall anything that happend to make him have bad memories, other than being there, condolences for those who have lost loved ones and friends

Whether or not you are retired...Something to look forward to: Ramblings of a Retired Mind -
I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped on. I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing my garage door opener.
Employment application blanks always ask 'who is to be notified in case of an emergency.' I think you should write, "A Good Doctor!"
You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn't like me anyway.
I was thinking about old age and decided that it is 'when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it'.
I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me, they were cramming for their finals. As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve!.

SCREWS, Eldon D YOB 1933 RA E7 05K Ops Sgt Det 4, JL68-OC68 & 4-3, NO68-JA69, Det 4, FE69-JL69, (Bobbie), PO Box 127, Holly Bluff, MS 30988, 662-828-3212, eldonscrews@telepak.net

Having just read DOOL#147 and reminiscing I realize that I had an excellent military career. I talk to others here in Holly Bluff who tell some awful tales about the Army. I even asked one man if he was sure that he had been in the same army that I had been in. As the days go by, I reminisce about places and people I served with and realize that I was almost a "Fortunate Son". Having said that, I am very fortunate to have served with some wonderful people and with some of them in more than one place. I'm sure you remember that we were all told that we were the top 10%, Well I can testify that that was true after serving in QM (1 yr), SigC (2 yrs) and Infantry (4 yrs) that it was very true. I'm 72 now and my wife and I are getting or have already had the normal things that circulate in our age group. Pill poppers to some degree but nothing serious or life threatening. I'm not going to make the Sinop thing in San Antonio in 2005 because it conflicts with the Chitose reunion in Lafayette, LA. I plan on skipping Chitose in 2006 in favor of Sinop. We do have busy season planned for this year however: Savana the last weekend with my 4 brothers - I'm the oldest. The Bob Wills weekend the last weekend in April in Turkey, Texas. The state UMC Conference in Jackson, MS, first week in June and the First Cavalry reunion at Fort Hood, Texas, in late June and lastly the Chitose reunion in Lafayette, LA in September. Might work in a couple more if I can. Was in ASA 3 times and have saved all of my orders so I can come up with names of men that I served with. Alaska, Devens (3 times), Chitose, Sinop, 2 Rock, and Taipei. You remember how they told us to not double talk about what we were doing? When I took R & R in Korea (61) my orders always carried my security clearance so when I got to Kimpo they asked me where I was going. I was going to visit my brother Ray at Camp Zama. They then told me that if I would courrier a bag to Camp Zama and that the sedan would then take me to my brother's quarters. I agreed and at Tachikawa got in a station wagon with a man who was obviously an NSA civilian and another man in civies carrying a company grade officers service cap. There I sat in class A uniform with a 1st Cav patch - the blue rope and all on the same seat with them and they were talking about things that they had been involved in in Korea. They mentioned a few names that I remembered so about half way to Camp Zama, I asked if they were in ASA. They didn't answer my question and there was not another work spake for the rest of the trip.
Hope all is well with you and yours. Eldon Screws

TARR, Don YOB 1945 E2-E5 RA Det 66, 66-67, 52 Rieder Rd., Edison, NJ 08817, 732-906-8757, dtarr@njea.org - I served at Det. 66 (Manzarali Station) from March 66 to September 67. As you may rcall, Det. 66 was Signal Corps, not ASA. (There was also a small Navy (Det 15) detachment on the base as well as Det. 27 (ASA) I had friends and acquaintances in all.) ...Don Tarr, (SGT E-5) Edison, New Jersey... I was drafted and began service on October 15, 1965, basic at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, went to Fort Detrick, Md. for communications training for three months. I need not detail what other things were occurring at Fort Detrick in those days, everyone knows about the CBR and "germ/bug" stuff that was occurring there. I am aware of incidents there during my posting that defy imagination and are best left unsaid. After completing training I was assigned to Detachment 66 at Manzarali (Site 23). My initial service was in RUQH, our comm center, which relayed secured TTY throughout the Med and to the States and also Asia. I was a Private E-2 when I got there, but due to heavy turnover made rank very quickly, becoming a sergeant (with a waiver) after about 15-16 months. From that point forward I served as NCOIC of the Methods and Results Branch of our unit. (Vern Myers, the E-7 who was NCOIC was transferred state side due to his wife’s illness.) I served in that position until September, 1967 when I boarded Pan Am, flew to JFK in New York and was discharged at Ft. Hamilton. During my stay at Manzarali, I played softball on the Det. 66 team, and did a stint on the All Star Team when we played downtown. Near the end of my tour of duty, Det. 66 was being slowly deactivated and many of men were being transferred to other posts as the site was being dismantled. I understand that shortly thereafter, Site 23 was turned over to the Turks. I’ve always wanted to return to what was Site 23 and see (if allowed) what remains. If anyone has any knowledge of the current condition and status of the base I’d like to hear from them. After my discharge I went to college (California State College of Pennsylvania) secured bachelor and masters degrees in Secondary Education and History, married and moved to New Jersey where I became a high school history teacher at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. After a very trying divorce I moved to Wayne, New Jersey and began teaching in the nearby community of Little Falls. I remained a social studies teacher for 12 more years and became active in the New Jersey Education Association (New Jersey union which represents teachers and support personnel) and moved into a full time staff job with NJEA. I have been employed by NJEA for 20 years, and have remarried (Lois) and have a son by my previous marriage (Richard) who is an optometrist near Pittsburgh, Pa. Two grandchildren, Nicholas (6), and Morgan (3), entice us to make the 390 mile drive from New Jersey to Pittsburgh as often as we can. In addition, we’re confirmed Disney World nuts and get down to Orlando 4 to 5 times a year. I hold my service in the United States Army on a high plane, and feel pride in having served our country. It is my sincere belief that our boys and girls who serve this nation should be afforded more respect and held in higher esteem. I’m 59 years old now, and could never fit into the dress greens and fatigues that I still keep in my army trunk, but when 9/11 occurred I became so angry that such an act could take place on our shores that I wanted to squeeze into those fatigues, grab a rifle, and head for Afghanistan. I’d love to hear from guys who knew me, and will correspond with anyone who served at Site 23. My e-mail address is DTarr@NJEA.Org. God Bless and hope all is well….NNNNNNNNKKKK

Enlisted in September 1961 for ASA duty. Took basic at Fort Leonard Wood, MO then sent to Fort Gordon, GA for teleype (723) training. His first assignment was to Det 27 and he liked it there. Said that his best friend was Pharr Edwards. Others that he remembered: Carl Showalter, Julius O'Quinn and an MP named Allan Chermak. Said that once visited the Ankara Kari-Hani for a looksee only. Also spent a lot of off-duty hours at Lake Golbosi. Troy laughed when I asked him if he remembered his RA number. Said that everyone should remember it from basic training as he had to know it to get out of the gas chamber. After Det 27 was sent to Fort Bragg for a few months and then volunteered for duty at Chitose, Japan. Was discharged in September 1964 Graduated from University of Dallas, 65-69.
