Jim Bowden in Sinop from Summer of 66 til Summer of 67.
I've got to admit, if anyone had a good time for their stint on the hill, it had to be me. Most of my memories of that time are of sailing and skiing on the Black Sea, and of being part of what had to be the best ASA sponsored basketball trip ever. What started out to be a four or five day TDY trip to Samsun for a basketball tournament extended into the chance of a lifetime "Authorized to visit" trip to Manzarali, Izmir, Turkey then to Frankfurt, Munich, and Bad Aibling, Germany. Ultimately, we were stranded in Athens, Greece and had to endure several restless days of bread, wine, and cheese on the coast of the Med. All in all we had 27 days on the road and it was great except for the basketball.
Another memory is of Sp/5 Tremblant warning "Arnold" the eshak (donkey) that if he didn't let go of his forearm he was going to get mad. That donkey could bite like hell. What a year! How about including me in the roll call pages?

Please add this notation to the "dog" list.
1978-79 "Half-Watt", male dog, terrier?
We had a cute little terrier of some kind named "Half-Watt" or just "Watt" for short. He lived at the Main Ops TCC until the SSO decided that he might have a bug shoved up his backside. (I am not making this up!). We in the commcenter were all of the opinion that if anyone had anything up his backside it was more likely the SSO. But RHIP so we kept the pooch inside the fence at Main Ops but he could not go into the TCC. Unless, of course, we smuggled him in during bad weather . . .
He was a good little soldier and cheered up many a homesick troop!

I was an 056 (05D) and worked at the DF site that was located out towards the end of the point. We had a couple of big yellow dogs out there that didn't like the Turkish guards very much. It was the responsibility of the oncoming shift to pick up scraps from the mess hall for the dogs. Seems like we used coffee cans to collect the scraps.
I looked through the names, but didn't recognize any of them. That really don't mean much, because I'm terrible about remembering names. The only name I remember from the place is Wayne Inman. I guess the reason I remember his is because we both went to Thailand from Sinop and were both assigned to the 5th RRU detachment at Ubon.
Pictures I took at Sinop were developed as slides. I have quite a few that I haven't looked at in years. I could probably do something with them if anyone is interested.
Please add me to you roll call and keep up the good work with you web pages.

The Evacuation Plan went into effect sometime during my tenure at the Hill (June 68-May69). I can't remember an awful lot about it except we would have to march across Turkey to somewhere near Izmir in an orderly military fashion and we had to take our Pomade along to make sure our hair looked properly military at all times. Being in the NavDet on the Hill gave us a lot more reasons than most to laugh at the way the Army did things, and I remember laughing a lot about this evacuation plan. If anyone remembers the whole thing, I would love to hear it!

My year on the hill was 1969. The first man on the moon and we missed it. Sent home so many things, a hooka for my sister, wood burnings from downtown, meerschaum pipes, semi-precious stones from GI Joe's.
Had jackets and shoes hand made. Never have had anything fit so well before
or since. Remember the puzzle rings, 4, 8, 12 pieces? How about those worry beads? Spent too much time in the EM Club. Who could resist 20 cent beer and quarter shots. Played those slot machines til I was out of change. Nothing like a wild cab ride down the hill after pulling your last mid but not wanting to waste your first day off. Ate in almost every restaurant in Sinop. Could not speak a work of Turkish so they would just lead us back to the kitchen and let us pick what we wanted. Only time I got sick was on that 'pizza' stuff they sold by the docks near the American Hotel. The Russian Fort and the hippodrome. The birds that made first landfall on the top of the hill after their Black Sea crossing from Russia. The locals picked them up and put them in sacks for a once a year treat. Very eerie watching all those lanterns moving about the hill top that night. The landline 'radio'. Sometimes on a day off we'd buy a fresh round loaf of bread from the bakery, a big chunk of goats milk cheese and a bottle of Turkish wine and just relax near the water.
Sometimes we'd just meander through town taking picktures, but not of girls of course. Sometimes we'd get a haircut which always came with a complimentary cup of chai. I liked the cinnamon flavored. The Turkish men walking hand in hand and whispering to each other. The call to prayer from the minarets. The Roman cobblestone road. The Black Sea everywhere you looked. The Cyclops residing in the cliffside caves.Oh, and don't forget the belly dances in the club. And what was the name of that band which was made up of four of the enlisted guys right from our midst? Was it meatloaf or something like that? Their advertising included the slogan, "You can't
beat the meat." We thought they were better than the Beatles and the Stones
put together. One by one they rotated and the band was no more. And of course that big donkey that was always excited about something. All these thoughts came flooding back when my wife was straighening up her jewelry box today and came upon two loose 'alexandrite' stones I brought home with me over 30 years ago. Then I looked for those meerschaum pipes that never got smoked. All great memories now that I'm 30+ years removed. Sure would be nice to have a reunion of sorts and talk over those times.

We lived in the exact same house (18 Houses) about a year apart! His site had a picture of my (our) house, and I almost fainted!
One story:
I can remember taking a trip with a couple of Turks (Adil Sert and Kazim Dincer from the motor pool) out to the village of Gerze, about 30km outside of Sinop. They had great rugs, and Adil and Kazim went into the shop first to check on prices. Then they brought me in. The shopkeeper couldn't charge me the "G.I." rate because he had already quoted his prices to my Turkish akadashes. I got a beautiful rug which three grown kids couldn't ruin. I ordered a lot of sports equipment from Europe to supplement our meager and outdated stuff. Worked in the gym and had an assistant named Harvey from The Bronx, but can't remember his last name. It's only been 40 years ago, but I do remember a lot.
I don't have the computer setup to send pictures, but I do have some if I can send them to someone to include in the gallery I would be glad to do so.The guys who came before the barrachs endured much. We didn't have WACS, barely had sacs, outdoor latrines, bad food, no sidewalks, and counted the hours, but the gang there helped each other to endure the loneliness and the frustration and helped to count the hours before we left. Subject: Time on the HillI would like you to add Jim Pruett and Sharon (Edwards) Pruett to your Roll Call list.
I was stationed in Sinop, Turkey from April 1973 through October 1974. Sharon was stationed there from August 1973 to October 1974. Some information about our time on the Hill. I met and married Sharon (the former SP5 Sharon Edwards) in Sinop, Turkey in a landmark ceremony at the Diogenes Chapel - the first all military wedding at Sinop! Sharon was one of the first thirteen WACs to come to Sinop in 1973. She arrived in August and we were married on 31 December 1973. Vicky England was Sharon's Maid of Honor and Frank Taylor was my Best Man. Chaplain Roy Mathis presided. I still have copies of the Diogenes Review with the photos and articles about the ceremony.
I worked in the Finance Office with 2LT Pagano as the Finance Officer. MAJ Langhorne and MAJ Seelig were the Det 4 Comptrollers. My Finance Sergeants were SFC Billy Williams (forever my mentor!) and SFC Mahoney. Sharon worked as an Administrative Specialist in the Comm Center for SFC Lowell (Trash) Hassart. COL Arena, then COL Heiss were the Det 4 Commanders during our tenure. CPT Woolford was my Company Commander. I have many fond memories of Sinop - other than the obvious one listed above.
After we were married, Sharon and I moved in on the second floor above a little dress shop located across the street from the soccer field - the address was 10/2 Arabacilar Sok. We had a great landlady who lived on the third floor with her three daughters and two boys and was forever bringing food to us. I remember going to the local butcher shop and ordering a kilo of ground beef, only to watch the butcher go out back to start his generator, cut a chunk of prime red beef off of the side of beef hanging in the shop and grinding it right before my eyes - probably still the only pure beef (no additives or preservatives) I have ever eaten.
Of course the Yeni Hotel and Chai Garden also bring back memories - having tea with the locals was always an adventure. The Hook and Bullet (Rod & Gun Club) was a favorite hangout, as was the NCO Club. Some other names you might add to the Roll Call (other than those listed above, none of whom I could find on the current list: Roger (Burly) Amborn 73-74, Jimmy Palmer 72-73, Ron "Preacher" Schemmel 72-73, Mark Meese 72-73, Victor Matlock (72-73), Steve Krivokopich (72-73).
As I think of others, I'll send their names. Thanks for the great walk down memory lane!!

Last night I was surfing the web looking at web site for Turkish travel. Something in Turkish caught my eye about American Radar or whatever. I clicked on and I can't tell you my surprise when I saw TUSLOG DET 4 on my screen.
You see, I was stationed on "the Hill" 40+ years ago from Spring of 1958 to April 1959. While there, I worked at the motor pool as a driver for 6 months and then as the truckmaster or dispatcher until I left. I also worked at the radio station (WONE...the voice of Camp Diogenes.) I was the early evening disc jockey 5 nights a week from 6:00PM to 10:00 PM.
Over the years I lost most of the photos and other memorabilia I had collected so needless to say I was delighted to view many of the photos on your different web sites.
I would be interested in having my name and e-mail address added to your site and would be curious in anyone remembers me from so many years ago.
I also saw something about a possible reunion to be held in Las Vegas in the future. I would be interested in information about that if it materializes.
Thanks for keeping this site. It was really pleasant to find it after so many years of no contact.Teshecurederum... (sp?)

From: Bert Miller bertholdc@n-connect.net
I was at Sinop from 1964 to 1965 and was a Sp-5 Aircraft Mechanic. We had CWO-4 McPhail, CWO Wooten, and a Major whose name I cannot recall. We flew the courier material to Istanbul and the some of the troops back and forth to Ankara, and brought in the mail. At the time I was there we had two twin Beechcraft's and an Otter. We had a Beaver for some time but took it to France for overhaul and never saw it again. Would be glad to hear from anyone who flew on any of these planes. By the way, we also flew Col. Fletchman's girlfriend back and forth to see him. I have a picture of him, girlfriend, and the plane.

Subject: NAVY DET 28 AT TUSLOG DET 4I appreciate the opportunity to add my name to the list of folks who spent time on the hill! I was among the first navymen permanently assigned to Sinop as a Permanent Change of Station vice our previous Temporarily Assigned Duty (TAD) shipmates. In 1965, the Naval Security Group made the decision to make Sinop a PCS tour of 12 months. Previously, CT's would come to Sinop for 60-120 days at a time. Most all of the men assigned to Tuslog Navy Detachment 28 came from Karamursel. Please find attached a U.S. Army Certificate presented to the first group of Permanently Assigned CT's to Sinop!
Thanks for the opportunity to join the roster of those who have served, and as you can see by the attached certificate, we honorary members of Tuslog Det 4 appreciate the recognition.
Very sincerely yours in service,

Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000I was in Sinop from Jan 86-Jan 87, Navy. I remember Bob Dog and Hippy used to live out at Hippodrome. Once in a while they would wonder up to the main part of the base and Bob Dog was so big and lazy he would be too tired to walk back. Someone would have to put the two of them in a truck and take them back to Hippodrome.
I also remember a small dog we called Mops, which was short for Main Ops where she lived most of the time. She was small and shaggy. Kind of a mutt but very loveable.
Let's don't forget the goat that the Navy acquired in 1986 either. He was cute as a small billy but when he got older he could be a pain. The chow hall would call sometimes and ask us to come get him out of their trash. Funny times.

I like your site about Sinop. I was stationed in Tuslog 169 in 1969 and 1970.
I worked as a 32D20 in Tech Control and was announcer, engineer and manager of KBOK Radio while there. Also had a chance to go on a chapel sponsored trip to Israel in May 1970, with one of the chaplins Father Michael J Rogers. He was from Ottumwa, IA, and is still in the pastorate in Iowa. I was from Iowa and still live there. Some of the people on KBOK was Dale "Dee Patrick" Swoboda, Noel Dahlen, "Super Six", and Dean Todd. It brings back memories after 30 years, but I enjoyed it then. There was some construction of buildings by Morris-Knutson Construction. Keep up the good work.
