Greetings from the Kitchen Table Gang Trust.
We are a rag-tag bunch of retired veterans who help out men and
women who are in VA and military hospitals with a little "R
& R" and comfort and caring. We have also started a
"grass roots" movement to stop the closure of VA
hospitals. We were wondering if you might like to help us with,
what many folks say, is a really great project. We hope you deem
us worthy!
We are holding our annual fund-raiser with the sale of our 12th
Annual Veteran's Celebrity Cook Book. The book is large format,
52 pages and has 128 recipes from some pretty famous people.
There is a suggested donation of only $10 (+$3.00 first class
postage) and you can get it from the Kitchen Table Gang Trust,
P.O. Box 783, Hanford, CA 93232.
If you'd like more information on the cook book and who all gave
us recipes, please visit http://taliaferro.net/cookbook

If you are not interested in this at all -then we are sorry to
have bothered you and sincerely apologize -just delete this

God Bless You! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Hi was a 283 Electronic Warfare Equipment Repair spec 5. Started
in the Jamesways and toward the end of the tour moved to a single
story building. Still walked to the shower room and the
outhouses. Flew from McGuire AFB in Sept 61 to Frankfort Germany.
Then took a commercial Olympic airlines to Ankara via Athens
where they changed to a Turkish crew.
There were three or four of us on the flight and we flew 1st class, still don't believe it. I was a spec 4 at the time, and there was a master sgt who was to be the hill's field first, I can't remember the other guys. I do remember we drank them out of champagne, and got an Air Force wife and her two wild kids pretty riped up so they would sleep.. It worked. Spent a week or so in Ankara at some hotel until the weather was good enough to fly an L20 up to the hill. Took two times to make it because of ice on the wings. It was some sight as we circuled the hill and landed on the beach.. Woke up the next morning and realized it was my 25th birthday.
I have a few more stories and pictures but will save them for another time. Some of the guys I remember are: Jim Bailey, Mel Wilcox, Kyiper, and the crazy arab Harry Abraham. till later Roy Van Order ASA July 56 thru Sept 62
. . . . . . I see where I am listed from
61 to 62. The dates are 60 to 61 and I left as a spec 5 . . . . .

THE HERSHEY REUNION INFORMATION
The REUNION this year will be 13-15 September at the Holiday Inn in Hershey, PA as the main lodging and hospitality site.
NOTICE: - - -Det 4 (Sinop), brats and friends are welcome to attend and enjoy the festivities. This Holiday Inn is a convention type hotel and fills up quickly. I have made arrangements with the Holiday Inn for 52 rooms at $79 per nite, a hospitality room and am in the process of making reservations for the Saturday breakfast at a nearby restaurant.. I have already signed a contract for the Saturday meal at the Penn National Race Course and that info will be forthcoming. EVERYONE WILL ENJOY THE PENN NATIONAL RACE COURSE FACILITIES! If you are attending the reunion and wish to stay at the Holiday Inn make your reservations as early as possible, preferably by 1 July.
Please bear with an old geezer like me........ I'm trying my darnest, at a distance of three hours driving time to Hershey, to insure the success of this get-together....... Therefore it is desired that make your room reservations ASAP so that, if needed, some additional rooms can be reserved for us.... If you wait........ then U might have to stay at another hotel in the area and commute to the Holiday Inn where all the action will be centered in the 1st floor PENN SUITE hospitality room. You can make the reservations by calling 1-717-469-0661 and ask for Donna or Alison.
When making reservations identify yourself as member of the "TUSLOG Det 27 and 4-4 Veterans Reunion" and specify what type of room you desire (single King size bed or double Queen beds) also whether you prefer smoking or non-smoking. When reserving a room you will be required to give your credit card #. If reserving by e-mail give them your phone number and they will call you to get the credit card # if U so desire. The reservations can be canceled later should that be necessary. This will insure that additional rooms can be made available to us should they be necessary.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends,
My name is Adem TAHTACI. I'm electrical engineer (studied in
Germany, title Dipl. Ing.) and translator in German. I also have
a travel agency. I live and work independently in my hometown,
Sinop. I love here as you do it:))
From 1965 on, as I was 12 years old, I had many American friends
from the base. Because I was attending junior and senior high
school (an english spoken school with the must subjects in
English) in Samsun at that time, so I was speaking perfect
English. And I loved speaking English and enjoyed frienship with
them. I had also many American teachers at the school. I was
grown up with reading the books of Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway
etc, (Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Farewell to Arms, The old man
and the sea etc.)
I have very clear and beautiful memories
with you, wonderful, unforgetable Christmas celebrations at the
base and more. You were transporting all children of Sinop from
downtown with shuttle busses up to base... I was also traveling
with some of you through Turkey, as little guide:)) I remember
Bob from Chicako my best friend for example, who had intended to
open a cafe in Sinop...
I want to say you that I am willingly ready to suppert this site
with pictures an photos from new Sinop, surroundings and from you
at the base.
Because I have an old book (Welcome to the United States Army
Field Station, Sinop, Turkey, Hož Geldiniz) concerning in 49
pages many photos of you and your social and sport activities
here.:)) We could also arrange a meeting in Sinop for example
with the participation of civilians and officers stationed here
at that time. How is the idea?
I think I brought you to that beautiful old days in yor mind:)) I
also give you my web site, which is being prepared in Turkish,
English and German..
You can look in it now.. : http://www.sinopetours.com.tr.tc
With best regards and respects from Sinop

THE HILL AND ITS
DOGS
I arrived on the Hill mid to late
February 1962 and the thing that amazed me the most besides the
kerosene encrusted Quonset huts I would be living in, was the
number of dogs on the Hill.
You could not take a few steps
without finding a new 4 legged friend.
As the story is told, ATATURK was
believed by the Turkish people to be reincarnated as a cat and
dogs being dogs were not tolerated well by the Turks. They were
not fed, mistreated and abused by the Turks until they found the
American GI.
Besides your buddies whom you roomed,
showered, ate and worked beside the only comfort appreciated by
us was the companionship and trust of the dogs. We fed them from
the food on our mess hall trays, food or candy from the PX or E M
Club and shared our E M Club beer with them.
There came a time in the Spring or
Summer of 1962 when the presence and number of dogs apparently
created a security risk in someone*s mind. Consequently the dogs
were fed poisoned food and thereby destroyed.
As I write this story I see in my
mind as clearly as the day I walked past Abbees tossing the dogs
into the back of deuce and a half and the 25 to 50 remains piled
therein.
While I recognize the importance of
our work on the Hill I believe the powers that were could have
erred more on the side of compassion than caution.
The only thing these dogs were guilty
of and for which they suffered was the trust and companionship
they gave to the American GI.

Subject: Rememberances
Just remembered another incident from my year on the Hill:
During my year at Sinop, the NAVDET was quartered for about nine
months in one of the barracks near the base perimeter,
overlooking the town of Sinop.
As the number of personnel on base increased, the powers that be
decided to move us into the barracks on the quadrangle opposite
the chow hall. (I think one of our barracks was Washington Hall
and the other Lincoln Hall, but I don't remember for sure).
After we moved to the new barracks, space became so short that
they temporarily quartered some Army personnel in our rooms. One
such new arrival from Fort Devens was to be in the room with
Leigh Hurley. He arrived and started unpacking his luggage. As he
opened the last suitcase, he asked "What are we supposed to
do with these??" We looked in the suitcase, which contained
all his study guides from Fort Devens, all classified Top Secret
and above!!
As the others made conversation with him, I stepped out to the
phone in the hall and called the OSI...within a few minutes two
MPs arrived, escorted the guy away and we never saw him again.

A bit more about myself if you want it... I enlisted 8/25/1964
after the Gulf Of Tonkin incident and attended Ft. Dix for basic
training. Then on to Ft. Devens where I trained in the brand new
facility in the student barracks area near Con 4 as an MOS 989
(changed later to a 98J40) and along with 7-8 other guys trained
at Ft. Meade and Devens specifically to first man the Bankhead
III/Hippodrome site. Even saw it operating in prototype at LTV
outside of Dallas as part of the training. Arrived in August 1966
at Sinop (sorta sober) ROD in August 1967 (definitely NOT sober)
and returned to Ft. Meade for my last year in the ASA concluding
8/23/1968. After a brief stint with the Montgomery County Police
I was picked us as a civilian at the NSA where I remained until
the Vietnam War funding started to dry up and I transferred to
the National Institutes of Health where I plan to retire in about
8 months. I have really enjoyed perusing your site and the

Although it is not their hometown, my father decided to settle

My father was NCO, worked in 2nd GES Detachment and B Building

probably one of you know him better than me. Because I was very
young and studing in high school. Later then I decided to be an

Bill, saw your web page on Sinop and boy did it bring back memories. I was assigned to Det 27, Anakra from December 1957 to February 1959. I was assigned to the Det 27 relay station, but to relieve the boredom I volunteered to drive a duece and a half from Ankara to Sinop as often as I was needed. The overland trip took 14 hours, and for fuel, we put 55 gallon drums in the bed near the fuel tanks and siphoned the drum when we got low. When we got to Det 4, the only transient quarters they had were in the dispensary, and I have spent quite a few nights there. Most of the quarters in early 58 were Jamesway Huts, canvas over wood floors. The floors were packing crates for the most part. I enjoyed the pictures and thanks for reminding me of days long gone by.
Best wishes, Maurice Cammack

I do not remember very many names, but my room mate's name was Jim Giedel and I do remember a young man named Myers, who worked in the Com Center. I hated being there and I loved being there. I have very fond memories of the place and had intended to go back someday, but I suppose that was just wishful thinking. I certainly have given up the idea now since I am disabled and on Social Security. I thought that maybe I could get my name on the list of people who have been at Sinop.
You can E-Mail me at farmerbigdog@aol.com.
I would love hearing from anyone who was at Sinop especially
during the time I was there.

My name is Michael Hargis. I was attached to the USAISC unit. My rank was Spc 4. I served there from 86 through 87. I can be reached at personal email mikentrish@aol.com. Please add my name to the list.
Still one of the best and most memerable tours in my career.
I am trying to track down Mustafa Tulson. He was the base photographer when I was there from 85 -87. I rented an apartment from him and really was close to his family. I have not been in touch in a couple of years and would like to find a way to contact him. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

I served two tours at Sinop. The first was in 61/62 when we moved out of the old wooden ops building in to the new one. The second tour was 1970 when I worked out in Hippy. Both tours were very enjoyable from and operations point of view. I often said that if my family could have accompanied me and had decent quarters for them that I would have considered staying for a longer tour. But it was not to be. I did not spend much time in the town except to do the usual shopping for stuff to send home.ie boat, copper, camel saddle, and knives to order. I know that some have considered returning there on a visit, but I think I'll pass on that. Met a lot of good people there. Saw the place progress from using out houses and one central shower room on post to some pretty nice buildings with actual roads instead of dirt and mud. Anybody who was there at the same time give me a shout if you get a chance.

From: Jon & Darlene Kjoller <kjoller@the-cia.net>
Dear Bill, Just recently found the Sinope site. Its really quite
an undertaking and I commend all who have put it together....Well
done...I was on the hill from apprx. Aug, 58 to Aug, 59 having
come from Baumholder, Germany. From Sinope I went on to the 316th
ASA Bn at Camp Wolters, Tx. The 316th was a STRAC outfit with our
equipment mounted on trucks and APC's suitable for closer support
to any frontline.
I have a fair amount of photos from the
Hill and would like to add to the other guys who have written in
but I'm not sure of the process. Do I write a commentary, etc and
how would I send this info as well as the photos so that it goes
on the list?
I have some photos of guys who are in shots from other guys who
are already on the site. ...kind of interesting....also have the
names of a couple of other guys who can be added to the roll
call. I thought it was interesting that I didn't see any
reference to the ASA Bns back in the states. I try to collect the
ASA D.I.'s of the ASA Bn's but haven't had much luck. Do you know
of any sources?...would appreciate your guidance on any of these
matters when you have time......For any records my number is
830-625-1064.....
Thanks much, Jon

Hello Gamaliel,
I've added your information to the database and will be updating
the Roll Call pages again on or about Feb. 10th.
By the way, what does "USACC" stand for??
Bill
===============================================================
Gamaliel replied:
USACC == US Army Communications Command, and while I was in Sinop, it was changed to USAISC = US Army Information Systems Command, and After the Gulf war once again to its original 1900's name of USASC = US Army Signal Command..
While in Sinop, I was the first supervisor of the Red Tech Control, I was also partly responsible for the installation and activation of the satcom station, and from Nov 83 through Apr 84, was the only 32D (Tech Controller) on the Hill..
Again Thanks,
Gamaliel Burgos

We were among first advance group to Sinop back in 1955 - 1956.
Our small group built the original facility. I left there in Dec.
1956 traveling in a blinding snow storm by 2 1/2 ton truck convoy
to Ankara over the mountans. A trip I will never forget. It is a
miracle we made it!! Never have been so cold in my life!!
Base looks almost civilized by 1958-59 hi hi!!
I have quite a few pictures of the base as it was originally
built along with several pictures of our small staff. Only about
60 guys at that time. I got a chuckle out of the picture of Sinop
International Airport with the water buffalo oxen cart!! Typical
transportation !! We landed L-19's on the beach. During the
winter we had NO contact with the outside world except via radio.
I think I served with Phil Hutton at Sinop.
I also served at Rothweston FS 17 near Kassel Germany prior to my
tour at Sinop, Tuslog 4.

This is a message to any fellow former TUSLOG Detachment 4 victims who may have been back to Sinop in the last few years. I was an Area Intell Officer (MOS 9666) stationed at the Hill during 1966 and 1967.
I'm taking a deposition in Ankara Turkey in late April of this year (2002). From there I'm seriously thinking of renting a car and driving up to Sinop. I'd like to go see what is left of the place after these 35 years. But I don't want to make the drive just to see the town; only if there is anything to see on the Hill. Obviously if I go I'll take my digital camera for posting on Bill's wonderful website.
Does anyone know if there is anything left? If it has been taken over by the Turkish Army (or other branch) I'm sure that my contacts at the US Embassy can get me cleared. Will someone email me their response? Thanks.
