I was stationed in Sinop from April 1967 to April 1968. Stumbled across your website and I am in process of e-mailing some old buddies. I was an O5K20. I went on a trip to the Goremere Valley with SSGT John Thurston and several others in a couple of 2 1/2 ton trucks. Also was there for the Savings Bond revolt. And the landslide that kept us from water for several days. Keep up the good work on your site.

Tom Wetzel here...
I was assigned to Hippy (98J) from March 1979 to March 1980. I loved it. I was promoted to SGT (E5) by the end of my tour. I left to instruct at Devens, re-upped for Ft Huachuca and hated every minute of USAEPG so I volunteered to go back to Sinop.
I arrived back on the hill 11 months after I had left the first time. They were still forwarding my mail off the hill. My second tour was Jan 1981 to Jan 1982.

Tom

FYI
In 1969 and 1970 there were two other plane crashes. My memory does not remember whether anyone was killed or not. I believe that one crash involved the deputy commander of USASA.
Both destroyed a lot of mail and smushed some cookies that I got a month
late - yep, they were on the plane.
Boy this site sure has brought back some memories - some I like, some not. The not are because I cannot remember peoples names. Names I thought I would never forget.
I was there from October 1968 - October 1969.
Thank You all for your pictures and for sharing your memories.

Hi Bill, sorry about not giving last name, The time I was there no stripes came down when it was time to be promoted and even though as a pfc I was in charge of my section until we got a spc. 5 in our mos o59. I left a pfc and all the guys who came without the mos who I trained all got promoted a month after I left and came to Vint Hill farms as spec 4. There was so many stripes that came down almost everyone got promoted. I was transferred from 319th u.s.a.security battalion , germany to sinop on june 3 1959 with maxwell e. hunt (joseph ochmann). I left the hill on may 7, 1960. to vint hill farms virginia. (also I sent you an email when I learnedabout your site from harry Lance. Also I think you wanted Tony Vitales email address, it is tjvitale 26@sbcglobal.net.. He is about 30 miles from my snowbird address in florida. We get together and golf and you know he was good in all sports, he whips my butt golfing. However, he is almost deff, has a implant behind ear to hear and most of the time he has to read your lips and watches tv close captioned. I told him it is probably due to the headsets he wore listening to all those dits and dahs. However he is like me, fat and old but still get around. Also did you have the dog named chu chub??? or was it the white one named fluff??? Anything else you need, please let me know.

What an outstanding piece of work you have done on this site. Thanks for all your effort.
I was in my local main street hardware store (find one of those) and was speaking with a part-time clerk that I have known for five or more years. We had never gotten around to our ancient histories but today, Veterans Day, he had USAF flight crew wings on a COBRA BALL (put it in Google) tee shirt. I asked him a couple of pointed questions about his military service and then we had a great thirty minutes swapping Spook stories. Two years ago, in that same hardware store, I engaged a guy in conversation who turned out to be a former officer in the Soviet ballistic missile research forces. He had begun his career in the Soviet military about the same time I was in basic at Ft Jackson. I did not let on about my sources of information, but I was able to drop some place names and events connected with his time and place. He at first took me for an interested scholar but then I dropped in a reference to Sinop and he went ashen. "You knew nothing! You were wasting your time there!" He spun on his heel and went out the door. He lives in my little town at the head of Old Tampa Bay, so I get to wave to him on occasion. I wish he would just, maybe, smile.
Please update my email to jnewcome@peoplepc.com .

After spending over 4 years as a 72B, I had an MOS change. I had noticed a change in my hearing and, while at my new duty station (AHS), I reported the problem. I did not hear as well when there was background noise. I was told that the test did not show a problem.
The problem gradually worsened and I again complained at my ETS physical after I had been in the Army less than ten years. Another test, again, "no problem". Since getting out in 1976, my hearing has worsened and I developed tentenitus about seven years ago.
I applied for a claim, was tested, and was told by the VA tester that my problem was there, but it was probably because of aging. I am planning to fight this.
If there are any other 72Bs or comm center personnel who have had a problem with their hearing and you think that the problem started while working in the comm center, would you please contact me at donhelton@earthlink.net

Mera-howdy, offensive,
As we corrupted the Turkish language.
I am Jim "Scars" Scarborough, 2 tours at lovely, sexless Sinop-by-the-Sea, 73-74 and 76-77, or, thereabouts.
First tour 98J on Trick One @ Hippy, Second during the Embargo where I picked up SMOS of CommCen Op and Finance Clerk. Actually, I defaulted to NCOIC of Finance, taking all my pointers from PFC Abe Cortinas, a true school-trained finance weenie. As a side job, I also got to burn the tapes left over at Hippy and Main Ops after the 'shutdown'.
Sinop was a unique place, a very challenging duty assignment and also cultural opportunity. As a History major, the Chapel tours were extremely interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed the two I went on.
We had the first 3 (4?) 98J WACS during my first tour, I think only one stayed at Hippy her entire tour.
Returning for my second tour, it was a riot getting off the bus from Samsun at the APO, there was a small crowd waiting to greet and haze the "Yenis". This came to an abrupt halt when they spotted the Sinop Sportsman's Club and Starship Hippodrome patches on my jacket. I already had more time in the fart-sack than they had on the Hill. It was funny.
After getting out, I worked for E-Systems, Greenville Division, where I was a Field Rep for Cobra Ball. E-Sys is where Bankhead III was born, and ran for her first year before delivery. Now I'm with Lockheed-Martin, first in Sunnyvale, CA, now in "Northern VA".
These are a few names I remember off the top of my head:
SP5 Drew Appling, Sp6 Gil Bouffard, SFC "Mac" McDanel, SFC Jim Coates, SFC Harry Hampton, SSG Tony Battista, SP5 Mike Whitehouse, SP5 Don Combs, SSG Charlie Urban, SSG "Taco" Joe Martinez, SP4s Mike Mangan, Mike "Mr OZ" Mroz, HG "Butch" Williams, John Kores, Bart "Wolfman" Bowling, Troy Priest, Mike Bednarck, "Gen." Patton, Gary Lara, and Vern "Top" Cooke and the "Wombat".
I have a photo of MSG Mark the Dog's last "wife", Crypto, the Wonderbitch. I'll scan and send.
Yikes! After all this yapping, I'd be surprised if anyone was awake.

Subject: Re: postcards of Sinop
When I was in high school, I began developing my hobby of cartooning. I was inspired by "Beetle Bailey" and tried (and I use that really loosely) to emulate that cartoon style. So, when I was on the "Hill" in '59-60, it was only natural for me to enjoy depicting some of the funniest (not so funny then), most natural experiences that were part of all of our everyday lives. Those personal experiences behind the postcard pictures will, I'm sure, be in the minds of the men for the rest of their lives. A close friend who was in the postcard distribution business in Atlantic City, New Jersey, had the pictures converted into postcards. . ( I used to walk around the Boardwalk with him filling postcard racks in drugstores, etc., while I was going to Drexel College in Phila.).
Actually, my thoughts then were not necessarily to profit, but rather to share the memories and laughter with others. When the printed cards finally arrived back on the "Hill", I was just about to leave the post thru the efforts of the Red Cross because of my mother's bout with cancer. I lost track of the cards. Hopefully, a number of men acquired the cards and, as I understand thru you, Bill, even have them today. I still have my set. Please be sure that they remain on the site and available to anyone who would appreciate them and have reminiscent laughs about what we all experienced. Incidentally, after I left the service, I worked for the company (who manufactured the postcards) for about three years traveling around the Eastern part of the country as a sales rep.
I would love to hear from anyone who acquired a set and/or how you enjoyed them.

The first email I could not get any photos to come up. The second email had a video frame and when I clicked on it, up came a pornography site"Sweet Teen Panties".
I thought this sort of thing was illigeal in a Moslem country. I could not imagine how
I got this email. The only connection to Turkey I currently have is this site,so could the pornography site operators be randomly searching the web looking for something connected to Turkey in the U.S? Idon't know how I got this email, and even though I am not a linguist and it has been thirty years,I can recocgnize Turkish when I see it.

I was on the Hill (Amerika Radar Istasionu, as it said at the entrance) in 1962, a 988.1663. Arrived in January and was one of the last to stay in the quonset huts. When I was there, there must have been at least a dozen dogs -- they went in packs and very definitely did not like Turks. I recall one was a puppy and had a strong liking for beer and hung around the old EM club. Another was called Can-Can the Whore.
Russ Fuchs' recollection about the demise of the dogs is correct. The man responsible was a Sergeant Major Star or Starr, who one day came up from Det 23 in Ankara, saw the dogs and didn't like what he saw, and directed that they be killed. It was done in the med center with a shot of strychnine.
Lots of heavy drinking that night at the Club.

I spent the entire year of 1975 at Sinop as 33D (Recorder Mech). Mark the dog was kept in the Mech's shop at Hippodrome. He was well cared for but the relentless march of years had taken a toll on old Mark.
He eventually became so arthritic that when he wanted to go out, he could only whimper and howl. We would load him up in a wheelbarrow and take him outside to do his business. Even the kindest of us could see that it would be more merciful to put him down.
The base doctor was called out and he administered the injections that finally gave Mark the permanent relief of the pain he had been suffering for months. He was buried within the fence at Hippy. He was sorely missed and fondly remembered.

His classic image of the bay looking across to the majestic mountains - a really beautiful view - just reminded me of one of the better stories of Sinop.
It seems that one of the ASA guys sent a similar photo home to his mother. She immediately replied that she could not understand why he complained about being assigned to such a beautiful place.
He had thirty (30) copies made of the photo and put one each day in the mail to his mother for the next month.
Next reply from Mom: "I think I understand now"

The other pilots were MAJ Kieger, CPT Tastad, CW3 Smith already old & crusty (Wind Sock) and CW3 Reveto. If the fellow was older looking, overweight and had sight problems, it was probably Smith. I don't hear from many Sinop folks anymore except the post surgeon & engineer. I'm about the only one left on active duty. And yes, that place was a real unique experience. Best wishes, Joe

Hi! I run an Otter website dedicated to the 12th Aviation Company stationed at

with helicopters and later Beech aircraft

I was a SP4 & SP5 "CE" crewchief/flight engineer. I'd be interested in seeing
if there are any pictures available of early Otter ops with this unit? I knew
there were Otters all over, but not in your location.
I feature Otter serials and construction numbers, plus a wealth of data on Air

Employed by E-Systems, my first "real job" after leaving the Navy was an "enjoyable" 509 {exactly} days at Det Four during 1968-70.
{In those days, for a civilian, if you spent 510 days out of eighteen months outside CONUS, you received a big tax break. The time on the airplane trip counted, so 509, with an extra travel day to make sure, was the minimum time I could spend in the Black Sea's "Paradise Lost" - grin}
Many, many memorable moments. I will try to recall just a few:
a) I think his name was "Ben" (Ashak of Bendigo). He was the donkey cruelly caged in the area between the double fence that surrounded the hill. When I first got there, you always took time at the main gate to rub his nose and give him love, if you forgot to bring a carrot or two. By my 2nd fall, he had turned mean, and I still have a scar on my upper right arm where he tried to take a chunk out of it.
The MP's had me write a report, which they used at his "trial" detailing all his mis-deeds. And which resulted in his paying the ultimate price for being a rebel against maltreatment.
Although it was certainly not in my job description, I was frequently asked to assist the aviation and telephone guys to trouble shoot problems in these two vital areas of morale.
(2) First, the high wing airplane was an Otter, not a Beaver.
And the WO-1 pilot (old and crusty) loved to line up on the very short area of Samsun airport between the terminal and the drop off the cliff into the town with a newly arrived Spec-5 in the co-pilot seat. He would drop his sun glasses onto the cockpit floor, tell the passenger that he was so old that he couldn't see s__t without them, then exclaim "Oh hell, let's go anyway" as he pushed the throttle to maximum, asked the younger guy to tell him when the airspeed dial reached 60 MPH, and then took off. The Spec-5 usually turned green as the plane "descended" toward the Black Sea as it strained for flying speed!!
c) The aviation officer asked me to look into a long term problem experienced with the HF DF beacon for the airport on the other side of town. His pilots needed this navigation aid as they made their low pass "bombing run" over the hill to let the residents know that mail was incoming (Tossed beer cans from the DOOM club not with standing!!}. Anywho, everything seemed OK with the beacon until I started using my long forgotten morse code to listen to the "broadcast." Whoever set the beacon up had put the paper tape in backwards, and the beacon was sending out "AIS" rather than "SIN" ... high tech place that super-spook Det 4 outfit!!
d) Frantic call from the base comm officer indicating that the "tropo transmitter" was down and the base was cut off from all telephone contact with "the world." Since one of the O-club members from Mississippi used this as means to do weekly commodity trading in "chickens" this was a real crisis. Fortunately, I discovered, after reading the frippin' manuals {RTFM-DUMMY}, that all that was needed was to tune the transmitter. DUH.
Do you think we will ever win the cold war in such a battle of technological geniuses?
e) Same comm officer purchased a kewl set of "boxed" Turkish pistols downtown. As a group of us sat in my room in July 1969, intently listening to the VOA {over the Heathkit S/W radio I had assembled to maintain my sanity}, in walks this idiot yelling "Look at my new pistols." In the background you could barely hear Neil Armstong proclaiming "Houston, the Eagle has landed" {As Garrison Keeler sez: With radio, the pictures are much better than those on television}
f) Standing shivering out in the cold winter night waiting for the movie theater to open with "Catch 22." Me and one the NSA guys discussing that next week we would have "Gone With the Wind" in which the only actor still alive was the baby in squadling clothes. Also, that the pilot of the U-8 was OK after surviving a crash of that plane enroute to Ankara. He was promoted to Major the following day. RIGHT!! "Catch 22" ... Major Major!!
Many other vignettes in the memory cells and no space to detail them: duck hunting in the marshes in fall, "fishing" by boat in the bay {more beer than bait}, all the brass that would somehow come out of the woodwork when one of the Russkie cosmonauts went up, the many trips up the towers at Hippodrome in the howling gales of mid winter, the "mass" of foam for an antenna that filled the room when we mixed too much, the comments of the guy in the bucket when the hydraulics failed on the truck lifting arm while extended as far as it could go to the Grainger antenna, Rocky parties downtown thrown by the rug merchant (no women allowed), belly dancers, and finally the Turkish engineer that shared a poignant story over supper about the three phases in the traditional relationship between Turkish father and son.
I would NEVER go back to that isolated place. But like a lot of things in life, I would not want to have missed the experience.Best Regards ... Bob Shirley

Subject: American Military in Turkey website is back up and operating
Hi Bill!
American Military in Turkey, the interesting website originated by Chuck Maki has moved, it's been revised, and is back up and operating. It is now http://www.merhabaturkey.com (or .org) and features expanded information about Turkish things as well as the stories of servicepeople who spent time in one of the world's most awesome countries.
I would like to invite friends of yours who were stationed in Turkey - particularly Sinop - to send in their stories and photos so we can continually expand the site. More than a quarter million US troops were stationed in Turkey in the 50's through 70's, so I'm sure there are lots of stories out there. The website is being treated as a "museum" or a "library" of true stories of experiences in Turkey, along with great - and historic - photos, souvenir items and other things.
When Chuck decided to "pack it in" and took down the website after troubles with his web providers, I asked him if he'd mind if I started it up again. He gave me his full cooperation, and, since I am an Internet Provider here in California, I obviously had the server strength to host the site. Chuck spent countless hours sharpening up the information, uploading the huge website to our servers, and then I revised the "look" of the site and now have it up and operating. Chuck did a magnificent job of soliciting stories from those stationed in Turkey, and I don't want that to stop, so I'm hoping you and your great group of troops will feel they have a place to share their stories, along with sharing them with you.
Thanks for the great, continuing service you offer all of the ex-Sinopians, and if there's anything I can do to help you, let me know.
Cheers!

I'd be more than willing to contribute a reflection page as well, but be forewarned that it would be fairly negative about my experience with the military, though quite affirmative about my experience in Turkey.

These pictures were taken while on a "religious retreat tour" sponsored by the Chaplians Office of Det 4. I went on the web entered "Sinop" and found this marvelous site and the memories came flooding back:
Sinop! An ancient town with an "American Village " on the hill above the pennisula. I arrived in the fall of 1973 and asked for a room with a view. I could see the town and the harbour from my barracks room.
Some days the sea was a steely gray and sometimes an icy emerald green but on
most days the Black Sea was a glorious blue..Sipping sherry with the Brits on the top floor of the Yeni Hotel. Walking on the ramparts of the ancient walls of Sinop wondering whether a Roman Legionare or a Page to a Crusader Knight got as homesick as I was. ..the sunsets...the call to prayers echoing through the town...playing darts in the Sportsmans Club..being the first woman to become Soldier of the Quarter for Det 4..the summer of 1974 the Turks bomb the Greeks on Cyprus..excuse me Sir could you show me how these M-14s work and explain to me the part about women being non combants..? ....My name is Kathy Rehm I was stationed at Tuslog Det 4 from 1973 through 1975.

I remember you from the Hill and think you do a great job on your web site. I worked in Sinop from 1960 to 1961 and remember you well. Didn't you smoke a pipe? Do you remember Beetle and Bill Burr and the games of hearts we would play?
This is the first time I have ever contacted anyone because of things that happened and my 20 year promise to never talk. Well 20 years led to over 40 years of never talking about the ASA, except to my wife and kids when they grew up. Boy do I have some stories to tell.I started as an 058 at Fort Devin's and then was changed to an 057 before I was sent to Sinop. While working on the Hill I also trained and worked as an 059. When I went to Bad Aibling, Germany I trained to be an 056 because they didn't need any more 057's or 059's. After my time was up, I decided to live in Europe. The army didn't like that idea and made me wait to the last day to discharge me at 4:30 in the afternoon. I went to Ireland to visit for a few months and finally went back to England and showed up at the airport and told them the army owed me a ride home to the USA.
I have worked since 1980 at Villa Joseph Marie High School as the Athletic Director and coach of soccer, basketball and lacrosse. The Villa is a small (300), all girls school located in Holland, Pa. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi.
Thank you for your response, and for your effort into the website. I've been flooded with old memories since my visit there. It's been bitter-sweet.
Yes, you may post my name. I was a spec5 when I left, but I didn't know it. I was promoted while in-transit to the states, but I was promoted by Det 4.
After I dropped you a note I read a letter from an electronics tech who had recovered some things from hippodromes's computer in 1976. The History of Sinop, The "lock up your daughter" thing, etc were amoung the things that he posted.. The computer's nickname was GIGI. It is interesting how she was named. She had very little memory, 8K, so everything that she did had to count. Instead of typing out a message for a 'time code error' she would simply type a 'G'. Soon the whole teletype page would be filled with Gs, thus GIGI.
I was an AP/DP operator while on the hill and I spent many dimly lit hours with GIGI. I thought you might like to know this bit of trivia.
I have some photos that I will scan in and forward later this summer. Thanks again,
Fred Pierce, Sinop,

I just wanted to mention one thing about a hill dog. The dogs named Mark and Krut were the same dog. Krut is Turk spelled backwards. I was there when the MPs took him to Samsun and dropped him off. He came back a couple of weeks later. The CO finally decided that he was good for morale (what ever that was) and let us keep him. We got his name on the lunch list so he got a box lunch every day, and that is how he got on the entrance list also.
Mark could sing well, and very loud too. He was a good and a great companion.

Mike and Mark looked like brothers, both being basically yellow lab types. Ufuck was a small white and brown dog about 12 inches high and 18 inches long. Mike and Mark did nothing but eat, sleep and crap. Ufuck was a bundle of energy, chasing anything and everything....never sat still. All in all they were indeed quite a group of canines and were well loved, fed and befriended by all who worked there.

I do often think about Sinop and what a strange time that was. The Turkish Arms Embargo was in full swing. I have been trying to find out what that Units Mission was? I have forgotten after all these years.
My Father passed away a couple of years ago. But I was given all the letters I wrote my family during that year. There were lots of photos as well. I plan on finding the time, and submitting them to you and other Web sites. Man, I really had to sit back and wonder at what a wild year that was.Thanx, Kevin

Merhaba Ahmet,
Thank you for your email message.
Most of my memories of Sinop are in regard to the primitive conditions of the army base in 1960 when I was stationed there. I regret that I did not make a greater effort to get to know more people down in the town.
I'll keep in mind your kind offer of help in case some of our group decides to come back to Sinop on a vacation trip some day.
Regards,
Bill Simons - Manager, US Army/Sinop site.

I was stationed on "The Hill" 76 - 77. I was a 72E, and worked in the ComCen. I also tended bar at the All Ranks Club (Club Manager was Bob Ayers). After viewing this site, I saw postings from several people I know. I found out about the site, when I was contacted about a Sinop reunion this year at Seven Springs, PA. I left Sinop and went on to Medical training at Ft Sam, then Fitzsimmons in Denver. I never made it back to ASA. Anybody that remembers my time in Sinop, feel free to contact me, and maybe I'll see you at the reunion.I have lots of pics of the area, and country, as well as the many trips to Athens with the Esek Airlines Gang. Greetings: I am unsure if I qualify for a Det 4 mention, as I was stationed in Sinop with TUSLOG Det 169 from September 1976 to December 1977.
..... snip .....
I was a 76P /76S SP4. I was a PLL clerk, and would order repair parts for (I think) AN/FRC 29 AND 39 Radios?
...snip ...
It was during the Turkish Arms embargo. My wife came with my son in tow
during December 76-77. I was a PLL clerk with 5th Signal Command,

Hi I'm Al Cantrell
I was the one in the group who didn't have a signal MOS as I was the Mechanic for
the operation. (also the powerman)
At first we lived in rented rooms in houses all over town but before coming back to the good old USA we managed to take over the Sinop Palas Hotel and all moved into one building this made things A bit easier sense we lived on the economy it was a bit easier to comunicate with all the eleven other guyes who were there at that time. When I got there we had one Very small building on the hill it looked more like A henhouse roof pitched all in one direction, this was OPS.
About the middle of my stay there I was able to procure some material and put
up A second building. A two room monstrosity. One room for generators and A shed to get in with A vehicle to work on it.No more repairing them in the open air. LOL
it was after finishing this project that our Ca asked me to scout for a place on the black sea to get a truck near enough to the water to load some barrels of salt water to use in A liquistat we needed to load test generators. anyway to make A long story short while looking for just the while on this mission I got the darn jeep stuck in the black sea. So I have the distinction of being the only one ever to get A vehicle stuck
in the black sea.
Im now retired and live in the Napa Valley Ca
My E-Mail is WineMan0@aol.com
Thank you kindly

Len Terry here, was stationed twice in Sinop, an oddity is that I arrived
on 08 Aug72, and left 08 Aug 73, arrived again 08, Aug 85, and left 08 Aug 86.
And that just happens was the change of Command on both tours.
First tour I was a 31J20b3, work at Main ops and Hippy, fixing TTY equipment.. The second I was a 33M4HE2, NCOIC of Hippy Maint.
I had more fun as a Sp4 than as a SFC.

My full name is Leonard S. Frerichs. I come out of Nebraska. I am retired military and retired from civil service. I live in Massachusetts. I was assigned at good old Ft. Devens on two differant occasions, taught at the old F Division- 98Js.
I did several tours in Korea; 226th at Kangwha-do (63-64), 2 ID (73-74)(77-78),and multiple other places. All of my non agency time was spent in SHAPE and other places doing the euphemistic special actvities (56-60).
The list is really to long for a casual email and would be better to do via other communications means. My Agency time was from 1962-1979. Have a great day.
