Subject: Brent Hardwick searching for my current email address...
I happened to log on to the website a few months ago and found Brent's message trying to locate me. We were barracks-mates at AIT at Ft. Devens in '66. He somehow got sent to Korea with the Signal Corp and I ended up with various tours in the ASA, including Sinop '68-'69. We were two guitar pickers who found each other quickly at Devens and then parted for almost 30 years. Now THERE is the power of the Internet!
We have recently re-established communications and it is FUN to say the least. He has aged better than I have (judging from his pix anyway) even though he lives in L.A. and I live in the country in N.E. Iowa. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the effort to maintain this site. I would love to hear from any trick mates at
Sinop from "68/'69...
Still kickin',

in Sinop Det 4
I got to Sinop in May 1965 via a truck ride from Ankara, now that was a
real trip over the mountains and all.
All I can remember about Sinop was that we had to work 12 hour shifts and with time off we were dead tired at the end of our rotation.
I can still see Christmas 1965 in the Club with a big pot of who knows what to drink and people falling all over them self getting drunk.
I can remember only one person I knew in Sinop and that was Tom Kulikowski, we met in Devens then ended up in Sinop and then I met him again in Nam at the 175RRco.
I have some slides of the post and the old part of town, maybe I can get them converted to digital and post them.

Subject: Re: Det 4-4 Troops
Merhaba and greetings from Cape Cod! My name is Hank Burke and I had the good fortune to have been in Karamursel from 71-74 as an O5H. That was when we "pounders" were required to wear mustard colored fatigue hats, supposedly to help our morale. We didn't care for them ourselves but wouldn't let on to our AF counterparts. Lots of laughs over that.
I am really glad to have found this site and hope to hook up with folks who were in Karamursel when I was. I noticed Al & Esther Bullock's names from the Det 4-4 roster and remember them from their second tour in the unit.
Hopefully I'll be able to get in touch with them along with other folks from back then.
I don't know if you are planning a reunion for 2007 but if you are, please let me know as my wife Denise and I would love to attend.
Cok merci'

2006 ASA Turkey Reunion
The 2006 ASA Turkey Reunion was recently held at the Drawbridge Motor Inn in Ft Mitchel, KY (Greater Cincinnati, OH) on September 13,14.15, & 16. The reunion is a joint effort of DET 4, DET 4-4, and DET 27. We had 73 adults counting spouses and 2 children in attendence. Guests enjoyed a hospitality suite all four days with plenty of refreshments which we supplied.
The Drawbridge supplied a half keg of beer which lasted throughout the entire reunion. (We're obviously drinking less in our old age.) Planned activities included a dinner buffet on Thursday evening at the Hoffbrauhouse Beer Hall and Garden in Newport Ky with wienerschnitzle and other German specialties.
Entertainment was provided by an accordian player in our room. It was Octoberfest in Cincinnati this weekend, so there was a 14 piece band from Munich in the main hall. Friday we all enjoyed a dinner cruise and buffet on the BB Riverboat paddle wheeler.
The weather was fantastic and many enjoyed visiting the open upper deck. The weekend concluded with our reunion Dinner buffet Saturday evening at the Drawbridge.
We ended the evening by returning to the hospitality suite to enjoy 2 trays of baklava along with the remnants of a bottle of Yeni Raki that I had purchased on a recent trip to Greece and Turkey.

Howdy Bill, Yep! sure OK to post whatever I write.
Rank was SP4 I was in Comm Center as a TTY repair guy. My photos somewhat
disappointed me as I reviewed them just last evening. I had failed to put names
on any of the Polaroid Land camera photos which, incidently, survived the last
50 years in perfect condition. Others are on 35mm slides.
I shall investigate transferring them to a more modern format.
I had several real beauties taken of Sinop from the HILL. Regards Bill

My name is Al Love, and I served at Sinop from about March 19961 to March

old times. I don't know how he found me in Wildwood, NJ, and he wasn't sure
himself.
He told me about this web site and it is amazing. My friends never believed me about the stories I told about Sinop. Now I read about messages from other guys on this web site about a bowling alley, running water, new buildings.
What about the outhouses, little huts with a oil burner to heat us, guard duty untill a new yennie replaced us. I guess that stuff has been replaced.
Anyway my E mail is ALove27704@aol.com.
I would like to hear from you guys and the next reunion.

Subject: Ben Winstead's MS150 Bike Tour
Dear Friends
In just a few weeks Ill be going on my annual 150-mile bike ride for my favorite charity, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This year is a special year for me as Im dedicating this ride to a fellow veteran who has MS.
When I joined the Army back in 1975 several of us recruits were selected to be among the first students to attend the joint cryptologic school in Pensacola Florida. One of the first women to arrive was Florence Callahan Burns. She, along with many of us went on the Field Station Augsburg after graduation and also like many others returned to civilian life after their first tour of duty.
Recently, that initial group of soldiers held a reunion in Las Vegas. I wasnt able to go but did use the opportunity to reestablish a connection with many people from that significant time in my life. Through that reunion I discovered Florence has multiple sclerosis (MS) and is in the final stages. She is pretty much house bound and is quickly loosing her ability to speak. She is only 48 years old. MS is a devastating disease that attacks the central nervous system.
So this year, and the years to come, Florence is my pedal partner for the MS150 BIKE TOUR. Although the money I raise does little to help her personally, she is ecstatic that I have dedicated my ride to her. What this has achieved is a tremendous amount of awareness as word is spreading about Florence, about MS, and about this ride.
I hope you can sponsor me in my ride by way of a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. All the money collected goes to the Maryland Chapter. Please help me spread the word and raise awareness of this terrible disease.
Checks should be made payable to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) and sent to me at the address below. You can also go online to make donations via a bank or credit card. This link is also below. And of course, your donations are tax deductible. If you have any questions about MS or the MS150 BIKE TOUR please dont hesitate to ask.
Thank you
Sincerely,
Ben Winstead

The aviation section had a female dog show up when I was the clerk there in 1969. We called her The Bitch. One morning we got to work and she had pulled a bunch of stuff out and had a big mess in the hanger. SFC Oscar Fleshman was the aviation maintenance supervisor. He had let her stay inside as I recall because she was pregnant. He got upset and had our Turkish driver take The Bitch way down the road in our vehicle and let her out.The next morning she was back with one puppy in her mouth and dropping some more. His heart melted at that sight and we quickly made a place for her and her litter. Everytime a puppy was born Sergeant Fleshman and one of the Turkish fireman, Hasan Aksan, would be cheering and slapping each other on the back.
We found homes for all the puppies but kept one beige colored one we called Budweiser. He had a funny walk. He would be walking in a straight line but his back feet would usually be offset a couple inches like a vehicle with a bent frame. Budweiser was still there at the flight line when I left in December 1969.

Thank you for the wonderful site. I remember well my days on the Hill. Donald Pettit, SP4, Military Police Det. I was there from March 1974 to October 1975. So I experienced the strikes, the attempt to civilianize, the Turkish take over and more fun than a 19 year old should ever have! The Provost SGTs were SFC Snodgrass, SFC Jerrold and SSG Raak. The Provost Marshal was CPT Roger Seymore. My roommate was SP4 John P. Higgins and the other young MPs I worked with were Terry Tomperry, Danny Wells, Joe Fuller, Danny Zankle, John Cone, Al Underwood, Sgt George Britton, Sgt. Ed Campbell, SSG Ave Planty, Sgt. Don Fernald, Sgt Marion Zulenski, Sgt Billy Olar, Terry Mann, Bob "dime bag" Glemben, SSG Ira Andrews.
Col. Heiss was the commander when I arrived and LTC Norris was the Commander when I left. The aviation crew that I recall was CPT Wolfolk (first rate CO), CW2 Skelly (super pilot).
1SG Hanna was a soldiers 1st Shirt and CPT Wolfolk was a fine CO and a loss to the army when he left for industry.
Since leaving the Hill I have retired from the US Army as a CWO and am currently double dipping with the US Food and Drug Administration and a part time professor at a regional state university.
If anyone should have an address for Al Underwood (MP 1973 to 1974) I owe him $60.00 and every time I attempted to mail it to an address of his it came back was addressee unknown I would like to get the money to him even after all of these years.
